Shakespeare in Love Storyline

Romantic comedy set in London in the late 16th century: Young playwright William Shakespeare struggles with his latest work "Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter". A great fan of Shakespeare's plays is young, wealthy Viola who is about to be married to the cold-hearted Lord Wessex, but constantly dreams of becoming an actress. Women were not allowed to act on stage at that time (female roles were played by men, too), but dressed up as a boy, Viola successfully auditions for the part of Romeo. Soon she and William are caught in a forbidden romance that provides rich inspiration for his play.

Shakespeare in Love plot

La storia, un pò realtà e molta fantasia, ci riporta indietro ai tempi in cui William Shakespeare, dopo aver scritto il "Tito Andronico", è in crisi di ispirazione. Fra l'altro, è afflitto anche da problemi finanziari e sentimentali. Il grande William si muove in strade buie e sporche di una Londra del 1593, in cerca di compagnia femminile e di soldi da scroccare. Ha promesso a due produttori lo stesso dramma ("Romeo ed Ethel, la figlia del pirata"); ma Cristopher Marlowe, poeta molto in voga, gli consiglia invece di parlare di due innamorati che non possono amarsi a causa delle loro famiglie: nasce così "Romeo e Giulietta"! Alla finzione teatrale, si unisce quella reale, quando Shakespeare conosce Viola de Lesseps, ricca ed affascinante promessa sposa di un nobile. Per i due è il colpo di fulmine! Si amano alla follia e lei è disposta anche a travestirsi da uomo pur di recitare in teatro affianco all'uomo che ama. Alla fine, l'opera andrà in scena con enorme successo, ma la ragazza dovrà sposare il nobile e partire con lui per le Americhe.

Shakespeare in Love trivia

1998 was the only year that two actors were nominated for Academy Awards for playing the same character in two different films in the same year. Dame 'Judi Dench' (qv) was nominated (and won) for Best Supporting Actress for playing Queen Elizabeth I in this movie and 'Cate Blanchett' (qv) was nominated for Best Actress for portraying Elizabeth I in _Elizabeth (1998)_ (qv)
About six years before the film was finally made, 'Julia Roberts (I)' (qv) was cast as Viola and flew to the UK to try to persuade 'Daniel Day-Lewis' (qv) to take the part, but he declined in order to do _In the Name of the Father (1993)_ (qv), so Universal Studios dropped the project when no suitable alternative was found. 'Joseph Fiennes' (qv) was the only actor ever actually cast in the lead role.
'Judi Dench' (qv) won an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her role as Queen Elizabeth, although she is on-screen for only about eight minutes in four scenes. This is the second-shortest performance to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. The shortest ever performance was by 'Beatrice Straight' (qv) in _Network (1976)_ (qv), as she appeared in only six minutes of the film.
The sonnet Will writes for Viola which begins with "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" is Sonnet 18. In reality, this sonnet, along with Sonnets number 1 to 126, were written for a male friend of Shakespeare. Some speculate that this friend is either Henry Wriothesley, earl of Southamption, or William Herbert, earl of Pembroke.
The play being performed for the Queen at the beginning of the film is Two Gentlemen of Verona.
